Double and Triple-glazed windows – which should you choose?

Sash windows have come a long way from their beginnings. Nowadays, though they still look like they always did, embodying that unmistakable British spirit, they can now fully utilise everything modern technology has to offer. One such example of this is double and triple glazing.

Why double and triple glazing?

These inventions came about as a solution to the poor insulation windows used to provide in the past. They’re a fantastic way to cut on energy bills. This is all achieved thanks to the use of two or three panes instead of one, with the Argon gas trapped between them acting as an additional thermal insulator.

What exactly can you expect from double and triple-glazed windows?

While it’s easy to simply say that additional panes improve thermal performance, there are a lot of aspects to these windows and knowing exactly what they entail is very important before you decide to make your purchase.

Double Glazing:

  • incorporates two glass panes within one window, with the space filled up with Argon gas,
  • offers a significant increase of thermal insulation – ideal for the standard UK climate,
  • offers a boost in the home’s security, due to the additional pane of glass separating the home from the outside,
  • is completely in compliance with current building regulations,
  • causes no reduction in the home’s natural lighting,
  • causes the windows to be slightly heavier and more expensive than single-glazed windows.

Triple Glazing:

  • incorporates three glass panes per window, with Argon gas between all layers,
  • provides even better thermal insulation, though it may be excessive in more mild climates,
  • offers even more home security, due to the added layer of glass,
  • may require additional planning permission for installation, especially for older, more historic buildings,
  • may slightly reduce the amount of sunlight coming in,
  • significantly increases the price and weight of the window
